04|08|2015 – FURTHER FESTIVAL SUCCESS FOR THE DREAM OF SHAHRAZAD
At the closing night ceremony of the 36th Durban International Film Festival on Saturday night 25 July, it was announced that Francois Verster’s film The Dream of Shahrazad won the Best South African Documentary Award.
The jury praised the film for the way in which “the filmmakers pushed themselves beyond their comfort zone, taking mythology and bringing it into the centre of modernity,” and for being “an ambitious film… [that] addresses life post-revolution and what is left after heartbreak.”
“This kind of recognition from the local industry for a film made entirely outside the country is hugely encouraging.”

Big Father Small Father and Other Stories will be screening at CinemAsia. The screening dates are 2 April at 9.45pm and 4 april at 5.45pm. 40 Days of Silence by Saodat Ismailova has received the Golden Alhambra Award at the Granada Cines del Sur Film Festival 2014. Jury members were impressed with the narrative risks taken in the film, stating: “With great formal audacity, the film creates a sensory experience that goes beyond the traditionally visual”.
40 Days of Silence is a Volya Films production, in co-production with Petit Film (France) and Rohfilm(Germany). The film had its world premiere at the Berlinale Forum on February 7th 2014.

Adhilkhan Yerzhanov’s new feature film project ‘Aliyushka’ was selected for L’Atelier, part of theCannes Film Festival 2014. Our producer Denis Vaslin, accompanied Yerzhanov during L’Atelier in order to present and promote the new project. On Sunday May 18th, Cannes had a special screening of Yerzhanov’s previous film, ‘The Owners.’ ‘Aliyushka’ is a co-production between Volya Films (The Netherlands), Mandra Films (France) en Kazakhfilm (Kazakhstan).

‘I am proud to be a Lady Mechanic!’ received TV production support from the Dutch Media Fund. ‘I am proud to be a Lady Mechanic!’ by Karin Junger about Nigerian women who came to Europe to work in prostitution and now, back in Nigeria, build a new life. The documentary received a development grant from the Netherlands Film Fund and Dutch Media Fund and is co-produced by IKON.

Documentary Hoe luidt het land by Stella van Voorst van Beest started shooting this month. In a journey through the Dutch sound landscape Stella discovers how sound and behavior are related. Hoe luidt het land is co-produced by BOS (Buddhist Broadcasting Foundation) and supported by CoBo Fund, Dutch Media Fund, Netherlands Film Fund.

Grande Hotel, a documentary by Lotte Stoops, recieves a honourable mention at Hot Docs. According to Hot Docs International Programmer Gisèle Gordon the documentary is a ‘gorgeously photographed elegy and a deeply humanistic reminder of the fragility of power’.
Grande Hotel premiered earlier this year at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2011. The Dutch theatrical premiere will be on the 12th of May at ‘Het Ketelhuis’, Amsterdam.

The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival held in Durham – North Carolina will be screening The New Saint. The documentary is selected in the NEW DOCS section.
